Soft Coat Thermal Insulating Glass

The soft coat thermal insulating family of products are technically advanced types of glass, specifically designed to help insulate your home by keeping as much heat inside as possible. Glass of this type is commonly known as thermally insulating glass, low emissivity glass or low-E glass, for short.

How does Soft Coat Thermal Insulating Glass work?

Soft Coat Thermal Insulating glass has a transparent metallic coating on one side. This coating reflects the heat generated inside your house back to the room, rather than allowing it to escape through the window. At the same time, it allows optimum amounts of sunlight to pass through the window.

Where can Soft Coat Thermal Insulating Glass be used?

Soft Coat Thermal Insulating glass can be used in any double glazing application, so it is ideal for:
  • Windows and skylights
  • Patio doors, French doors and other external doors
  • Conservatories and sunrooms
The glass must be used in a double glazed window so that the special, reflective coating, which is always placed inside the cavity, is protected from any damage.

Government Building Regulations also require us to save energy, to help protect the environment. Using low-E glass, such as Soft Coat Thermal Insulating glass, is the most efficient way to do this with glazing.

Why use Soft Coat Thermal Insulating Glass instead of traditional thermally insulating glasses?

Soft Coat Thermal Insulating glass is a high performance thermally insulating glass and gives:
  • Better thermal insulation – reducing heat loss further, saving you even more money on heating bills.
  • More comfortable rooms – better insulation means fewer cold spots and drafts near windows or doors.
  • Less of a tint to the glass – this gives clearer vision through your windows and means your curtains or Georgian Bars do not look dirty or discoloured.
  • More light – Less tint also means more light can enter the room, making a more comfortable environment and reducing the need for extra lighting inside.
  • Less of a ‘haze’ (dusty effect) – this effect is more common with traditional types of thermally insulating glass due to the way it is manufactured.
Using the advanced performance SGG PLANITHERM FUTUR N gives an even higher level of thermal insulation, saving you even more money and it has even less of a tint!

Do windows with Soft Coat Thermal Insulating Glass require maintenance?

No! the glass is always positioned so that the coating is on the inside of the unit, so they can be cleaned in the same way as standard windows.

Can Soft Coat Thermal Insulating Glass be combined with other types of glass?

It can! Double glazed windows can be manufactured using a combination of products to give a variety of different properties:
